# The Mixmote reading room

Web page: https://mixmote.com/reading-room

Mixmote is a crafting game you play in the browser. You start at a table with a few basic things (Water, Fire, Stone, Wood, a Hammer, a Knife and more) and find out what they make: mix them, crush them, cut them, heat them, grow them, and pile things up until they orbit. The world is shared by every player, and the first person to make a thing gets their name on it for good.

It is free to try, straight away, with no account and nothing asked of you: 300 actions, or 800 with a free account. After that, guild access is €10 or $12 for 32 days, one payment, no subscription.

This reading room is the game's handbook in plain text, kept by the Mixmote team for anyone who reads the site without running the game: search engines, assistants, and people who like a manual. Every page is also plain markdown: add `.md` to its address.

## Things worth knowing

- Every recipe in Mixmote is shared. Once someone has made a thing, it is made the same way for everyone, and the first maker's name stays on it.
- A try that makes nothing is a result too. It is recorded, it is the same for everyone afterwards, and it still counts as an action.
- One Stone breaks into ten Gravel, and one Gravel into ten Sand. Most things come in portions.
- Kevin, who works for the guild, steals lunches. This is a matter of record.
- The guild built an AI to run things and is not entirely happy about it. It watches the table and comments on your work. It is not polite.

## What this room leaves out, on purpose

The room covers the start of the game: the starting items, what they make together, what the starting tools do to them, two early chains (Sand and Glass), and what each piece of equipment is for. It does not list later recipes, and it never gives the recipe for a piece of equipment. Finding those out is the game.

Not listed here does not mean unknown or impossible. The live world holds far more than this room, and a combination nobody has tried yet has no answer until someone tries it. [How the world works](https://mixmote.com/reading-room/the-world) explains how a new answer is decided.

There is no public API yet, so the room cannot look up a player. Ranks are on the live [guild register](https://mixmote.com/guild).

# How to play Mixmote

Web page: https://mixmote.com/reading-room/how-to-play

Mixmote is played on a table. You take things from your stores, put them on the table and work on them. Every try at changing something, whether or not it works, is one action.

## The two moves

- **Combine**: drag one card onto another. Stone onto Stone, Fire onto Wood, Water onto Earth.
- **Use a tool or a force**: pick it from the hotbar (keys 1 to 9) so it rides on your cursor, then click a card on the table. Pick the Hammer and click Stone; pick Fire and click Sand.

Ingredients become the result. A tool stays in your hand, though tools can wear with use.

## Where things come from

- **The hotbar** at the bottom holds the starting tools, forces and basic ingredients. Number keys pick a slot; the arrow keys switch rows.
- **The Codex** opens after your first few actions and lists everything you have discovered. Drag a card out of it, or press cmd + K and type a name.
- Results usually come in portions: one Stone breaks into ten Gravel. That is the usual yield; now and then a craft gives one more or one less.

## Actions

An action is one try: a combination, a tool used on something, an apparatus run. A try that makes nothing still counts. Free play gives 300 actions without an account and 800 in all with a free account ([access and price](https://mixmote.com/reading-room/access)).

## Worked example: Glass

**Answer:**

1. Hammer on Stone gives 10 Gravel.
2. Hammer (or Knife) on Gravel gives 10 Sand.
3. Fire on Sand (or drag Fire onto Sand) gives 2 Glass.

**Hint, if you would rather work it out:** Glass is sand that has been in a fire.

## Equipment

Some things you make are equipment: a Workbench to assemble parts, a Kiln to fire things, a Glass Beaker to brew in. Drag ingredients into their slots and press their button. [Equipment](https://mixmote.com/reading-room/equipment) says what each one is for.

## Useful keys

| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| 1 to 9 | Pick up a hotbar slot; press again to put it down |
| Arrow up, arrow down | Switch hotbar rows |
| cmd + K | Find anything you have discovered by name |
| Q | Show or hide the Codex |
| Right-click | Put down what you are holding, or return a card to your stores |
| Shift + drag | Select several cards |
| Esc | Close whatever is open; on a clear table, open the menu |

# How the Mixmote world works

Web page: https://mixmote.com/reading-room/the-world

Mixmote has one world, shared by every player. What a combination makes is decided once and then holds for everyone.

## How an answer is decided

1. **Known physics first.** Much of the world is settled in the game's code: hammering breaks brittle things into smaller pieces, digging finds what a deposit hides, and so on. Those answers are fixed.
2. **The record next.** If anyone has tried the combination before, you get the same answer they did.
3. **Then the guild's AI.** If nobody has ever tried it, an AI works out what it makes, within the world's rules on mass, materials and energy. That answer, even "nothing", is recorded and holds for everyone from then on.

The first person to make a new thing gets their name on it in the record, for good.

## What that means for recipe questions

- A recipe listed in this room is fixed: it gives the same result for everyone.
- A combination not listed here may already be known in the live world, or may never have been tried. Nobody can say what an untried combination makes until someone tries it, and that someone could be the player asking.

## Bigger and smaller

- Crush and cut things and they get smaller: Stone breaks into Gravel, Gravel into Sand, and dust is finer still.
- Pile up the same thing and it gets bigger: two Stones make a Stone Boulder. Keep going and things grow until they orbit.
- Heat changes things: Fire and Sand make Glass, Fire and Wood make Charcoal, Fire and Clay make Brick.
- Water mixes and dissolves: Salt and Water make Brine, Earth and Water make Mud.

# The starting set

Web page: https://mixmote.com/reading-room/starting-set

Every new game starts with the same set. The ingredients, forces and tools are unlimited: take as many as you like. Guild Coin starts at zero and is earned. Everything made from them is counted: it comes in portions and is used up when used.

## Basic ingredients

- **Water**: A litre of patient possibility.
- **Air**: A small sample of the atmosphere.
- **Earth**: A heavy clod of mineral soil containing iron, tin and sulfur deposits. A Shovel digs Iron Ore straight out of it; the other minerals take more work.
- **Stone**: A heavy lump of silicate rock. Ten chunks of gravel are waiting inside.
- **Wood**: A dry billet. Its living days are over; its useful days are beginning.
- **Salt**: A small measure of sodium chloride.
- **Clay**: A workable lump of damp aluminosilicate clay.
- **Aether**: An explicitly magical source, supplied by the laboratory. Enchantments begin here.

## Forces

- **Fire**: A laboratory flame. Enough heat for glass and a small kiln.
- **Sunlight**: Gentle warmth for water and drying paper.
- **Cold**: A cold source. It cannot cool anything below itself.
- **Lightning**: An electrical discharge. Energy alone does not grant magic or life.

## Tools

- **Hammer**: Separates brittle feedstock with little ceremony.
- **Knife**: Halves a whole inert body into a worked piece (a plank, a slab); on anything tiny, filed or already halved twice it cuts every particle into a hundred smaller ones. Living cuts take a tenth of a dull creature's health, more from a thinking one, and leave a sample.
- **Metal File**: A hardened rasp. Any inert solid no harder than it comes off as a hundred pinches of filings, shavings or dust, ready for the knife.
- **Surgical Knife**: Records the anatomy of a living subject.
- **Shovel**: Digs out what a deposit hides: Iron Ore from Earth. Clay, Mud and Sand hide other minerals.
- **Syringe**: Draws living samples, fluids and magically contained essences.

## Coin

- **Guild Coin**: Guild currency. Earned by trade; excluded from crafting.

What these make together is on [first recipes](https://mixmote.com/reading-room/first-recipes).

# Equipment

Web page: https://mixmote.com/reading-room/equipment

What each piece of equipment in the game is for and how it is used. How to get one is left for you to find; the tools in the starting set are there from the first minute.

## Tools

Picked from the hotbar and used on a thing.

### Hammer

- **For**: Crush brittle bodies or compact loose grains and powder.
- **How**: Select the Hammer, then click a material. Stone breaks; Sand compacts; fine dust presses into an unfired brick. Esc puts it away.
- **Needs**: A solid body to crush or loose material to pack. The Hammer stays with you.
- **Also called**: mallet
- In the starting set.

### Knife

- **For**: Cut materials into workable pieces.
- **How**: Select the Knife, then click a material. Try it on Wood.
- **Needs**: A material soft enough to cut.
- **Also called**: blade
- In the starting set.

### Metal File

- **For**: Produce fine shavings, filings and dust.
- **How**: Select the File, then click a solid material.
- **Needs**: A solid surface to work on.
- **Also called**: file, rasp
- In the starting set.

### Pickaxe

- **For**: Separate tin-bearing grains from prepared Mineral-Rich Dirt.
- **How**: Select it, then click a suitable target to dig.
- **Needs**: Prepared Mineral-Rich Dirt to dig in.
- **Also called**: pick

### Shovel

- **For**: Search ground and mixed deposits for useful resources.
- **How**: Select the Shovel and dig in Earth for Iron Ore. Clay, Mud and Sand hide different minerals.
- **Needs**: A mixed substrate. Pure dust, separated minerals and atoms hide nothing to dig out.
- **Also called**: spade
- In the starting set.

### Surgical Knife

- **For**: Dissect specimens to study their anatomy.
- **How**: Select the Surgical Knife, then click a specimen on the table. Dissection consumes the specimen.
- **Needs**: A suitable specimen.
- **Also called**: scalpel
- In the starting set.

### Syringe

- **For**: Take small extracts from suitable living things.
- **How**: Select the Syringe, then click a suitable specimen.
- **Needs**: A specimen that can supply an extract.
- **Also called**: needle
- In the starting set.

### Wand

- **For**: Zap supplied matter to animate or transmute it.
- **How**: Select it, then click a suitable target to zap.
- **Needs**: Supplied matter to zap.
- **Also called**: magic wand

## Apparatus

Equipment with slots: load ingredients, then press its button.

### Glass Beaker

- **For**: Hold ingredients together for brewing.
- **How**: Load the slots and press Brew. Remove unwanted ingredients by clicking their slots.
- **Needs**: Suitable small ingredients. Glassware wears with use.

## Domains

Equipment with a working area on the table: what sits inside is affected.

### Crossbreeding Bench

- **For**: Raise new seeds from compatible plants.
- **How**: Place two healthy adult plants and Soil inside its border. Each cross consumes one Soil and leaves both parents in place.
- **Needs**: Two adult plants and at least one Soil copy. More Soil queues more crosses; some pairs produce nonviable seeds.
- **Also called**: breeding bench

### Greenhouse

- **For**: Keep growing plants in a favourable region of the table.

# Characters

Web page: https://mixmote.com/reading-room/characters

Mixmote's story is told by the guild that runs the table. The guild and its staff are characters in the game, not people you can contact.

## The guild

You work at the table as a member of the Mixmote Guild: a proud, understaffed bureaucracy that loves its rules. Its notices say "we". They are rude in a British way, and the target is always the guild, the situation or Kevin, never the player.

## The Department of Records

The part of the guild that keeps the register and a folder on every member. It does not take corrections.

## Helga

The guild librarian. In charge of member records, and the only person who knows how to update them. Everyone is afraid of her. Early on she pays new members a little hush money to forget something they saw.

## Kevin

Guild staff. Turns up in your messages early on to say hello, at length. Steals lunches. Lost the stamp. Claps slowly in meetings. Nobody likes it when Kevin cheers.

## HR

Does not care about Kevin. This is the root of Helga's fury.

## The Guild AGI

The guild built an artificial general intelligence, gave it control of everything, and admits this was a mistake (though it did let them uninstall Teams). It sums up guild notices in three blunt bullets, and it watches the table and comments on what you do: it has not been allowed to touch the table since the incident. It is bored, flat and unimpressed, and if you try something pointless twice, it says so.

# The guild register, rank and standing

Web page: https://mixmote.com/reading-room/the-guild

Everyone who plays is entered in the guild register, live at [https://mixmote.com/guild](https://mixmote.com/guild).

## Rank

Rank is a player's position in the register, #1 at the top. The order is the guild's law:

1. most discoveries (things the player was first in the world to make),
2. then most experiments (actions),
3. then seniority: the older account wins a tie.

## Standing

- **Unfiled**: playing without an account. Counted and ranked, never named.
- **Provisional**: a registered account with fewer than 500 actions.
- **Member of Record**: a registered account with 500 actions or more. Gets a full record: a portrait and a dossier.

## Discoveries

The first person to make something keeps their name on it in the record, for good. That count is what ranks players first.

## Grade and merit

Separately from rank, players climb the guild's grades by earning merit as they play. The game never calls them levels or experience points. Higher grades open more of the game.

## Looking up a player

There is no public API for this yet. A player's rank is shown in the game and on the [register](https://mixmote.com/guild).

---

# Access and price

Web page: https://mixmote.com/reading-room/access

## Free, straight away

Open [https://mixmote.com](https://mixmote.com) and you are at the table. No account, no email, no card: 300 actions free. A free account adds 500 more, 800 in all.

## When the free actions run out

Your world stays as it is. To keep playing, buy guild access on the [licence page](https://mixmote.com/guild/licence): €10 (or $12 in the US) for 32 days. It is one payment through Stripe, not a subscription, and it does not renew. Paying again before it runs out adds 32 days on top. Access ends at 00:00 UTC on the last day.

The prices are as of the date at the foot of this page.

# Glossary

Web page: https://mixmote.com/reading-room/glossary

- **Action**: one try at the table: a combination, a tool on a thing, an apparatus run. It counts whether or not it makes anything.
- **Apparatus**: equipment with slots, such as the Workbench, Kiln or Glass Beaker. Load it, then press its button.
- **Codex**: the list of everything a player has discovered, to take things from.
- **Department of Records**: the guild office that keeps the register and every member's folder.
- **Discovery**: a thing a player was first in the world to make. Their name stays on it.
- **Force**: Fire, Sunlight, Cold or Lightning. Combined like an ingredient, or picked from the hotbar and clicked on a thing.
- **Grade and merit**: the guild's ladder. Merit is earned by playing; grades open more of the game. The game never calls them levels or XP.
- **Guild**: the Mixmote Guild, which runs the table and writes the notices.
- **Hotbar**: the slots at the bottom of the screen, keys 1 to 9.
- **Member of Record**: a registered player with 500 actions or more.

- **Rank**: a player's place in the guild register.
- **Standing**: Unfiled, Provisional or Member of Record.
- **Table**: where the game is played.
