How the Mixmote world works

Mixmote is a crafting game you play in the browser. This page is part of the reading room, the game's handbook in plain text.

Mixmote has one world, shared by every player. What a combination makes is decided once and then holds for everyone.

How an answer is decided

  1. Known physics first. Much of the world is settled in the game's code: hammering breaks brittle things into smaller pieces, digging finds what a deposit hides, and so on. Those answers are fixed.
  2. The record next. If anyone has tried the combination before, you get the same answer they did.
  3. Then the guild's AI. If nobody has ever tried it, an AI works out what it makes, within the world's rules on mass, materials and energy. That answer, even "nothing", is recorded and holds for everyone from then on.

The first person to make a new thing gets their name on it in the record, for good.

What that means for recipe questions

  • A recipe listed in this room is fixed: it gives the same result for everyone.
  • A combination not listed here may already be known in the live world, or may never have been tried. Nobody can say what an untried combination makes until someone tries it, and that someone could be the player asking.

Bigger and smaller

  • Crush and cut things and they get smaller: Stone breaks into Gravel, Gravel into Sand, and dust is finer still.
  • Pile up the same thing and it gets bigger: two Stones make a Stone Boulder. Keep going and things grow until they orbit.
  • Heat changes things: Fire and Sand make Glass, Fire and Wood make Charcoal, Fire and Clay make Brick.
  • Water mixes and dissolves: Salt and Water make Brine, Earth and Water make Mud.
